There are some yarns that as soon as you pick them up, you know that they may be not all that you are hoping. That was my feeling about Lion Brands Wool-Ease cakes, but I was pleasantly surprised to find much I actually enjoy working with this yarn. So, without further ado let’s get into the Lion Brand Wool-Ease Cakes yarn review.
Lion Brand Wool-Ease Cakes are self-striping cakes of a light dk weight 80% acrylic/ 20% wool blend that comes in 7 beautiful colorways. Each cake is 5.3oz/150g, or 590yds/540m, which makes these cake a little smaller than I would prefer. I am 1/3 of the through my c2c and have already finished three cakes, not quite what I was hoping for.
- suggested needle size: 5/3.75mm
- suggested hook size: H-8/5mm
- Machine wash – lay flat to dry
When I picked up one these yarn cakes for the first time, I was surprised how much I like the texture. I have a slight allergy to wool that causes my entire body to itch when I work with it, and I was fully expecting that to happen. To my happy, happy surprise I have now gone through three full cakes and have had no issues at all.
It doesn’t feel itchy or scratchy, although you will come across stray long hairs that haven’t want to incorporate or have worked themselves entirely free. I usually can feel these hairs, and they are what cause that scratchy, itchy feeling, but the hairs I have found working with Lion Brand Wool-Eases Cakes have all been long, soft, and very manageable.
I was interested in finding out how this would come out after being washed. After washing some yarns get softer, and some get scratchier. It can be frustrating to have a project you spent weeks or months working on, get washed, and come out scratchy and uncomfortable.
I was pleasantly surprised that after washing, according to label directions, the little C2C square I made came out with nearly the same texture and beautiful stitch definition.
The picture shows two C2C squares, the one on the left that is a solid mint green has not been washed. The square with the yellow-green corner has been washed, and I love how it came out.
I am currently using the colorway Poseidon to create a beautiful C2C, and I love it. I think the yarn would be great for a lot of uses, especially items intended to keep you warm like sweaters, mitten, hats, jumpers, blankets. The list could go on and on.
I would say that there are some places where I think Lion Brand Wool-Ease Cakes would not work out well. Such as items that would need to soak up water, breathe well, toys, or things that will see heavy abuse.
Where to find…
Lion Brand does a reasonably good job of making its products as widely available as possible, and so I was surprised at how few retailers are carrying Lion Brand Wool-Ease Cakes. I have had some trouble finding in a store near me. Currently, it seems only my local Joann’s is carrying on there shelves.
Just like in stores, I was surprised how few online retailers are carrying it as well. There are a few though that are, such as LionBrand.com at $8.49, Walmart in a three pack for $10.67, Joann’s for $8.99, and Amazon for $12.77.
I have enjoyed working with yarn, and I will be picking up more for future projects. I would definitely say this yarn is Yarn Walk Approved! lol. I hope that you will give this yarn a chance I think it would make some very stunning fall sweaters.
If you give this yarn a chance I would love to hear your thoughts and see your projects, please share them with me below in the comments sections, on Facebook, on my Instagram. I look forward to hearing from you!
